Bible

The second grade Bible curriculum teaches Biblical principles through Bible heroes, with the goal that every child will develop a servant’s heart as they read the Bible and learn to live out the Word of God. The Doctrines of the Bible, God, Man, Salvation, Church, Angels and Satan and End Times are taught as they correlate with a particular lesson. It also includes Bible memory verses, hymns, skills and background information that relate to daily lessons. Bible curriculum is taken from the Bob Jones University Press.

Language Arts

The Reading program in Second Grade uses Classic Literature as well as experiences in reading through book clubs, classroom informational reading, DEAR DAYS (Drop Everything And Read) and novels read in the classroom. The goal in second grade is independent reading and includes two book reports. A Phonics review is given the first 20 weeks of second grade to reinforce those skills developed in first grade and kindergarten. English includes creative writing and learning to write expository paragraphs. The parts of speech, types of sentences, punctuation and the correct use of capital letters are taught through songs and repetition. The Spelling program in second grade is taught phonetically so the students recognize basic spelling patterns. Language Arts curriculum is taken from Open Court, SRA, Shurley English Method, and A Beka Book Series.

Math

The Math curriculum at the second grade level includes Counting beyond 10,000, Place value to the hundred thousand, rounding to 100, memorization of the addition and subtraction families through 18, problem solving, finding perimeters, critical thinking skills, money, Roman numerals, graphs, telling time to the minute, calendars, fractions, mixed numbers, measurements in English and metric, memorization of the 2 through 5 multiplication and division tables. Continual practice is required after each skill is learned, so that mastery of each skill is accomplished. Math curriculum is taken from A Beka Book Math Series.

History and Geography

History and Geography are taught the first semester in second grade. The goal for this course of study is to learn about our country. Our country's flag, holidays, and songs begin the study. The people who built America are introduced, as well as the role of the Native Americans. Colonists, pioneers, cowboys and immigrants and how they helped make America the country it has become are also studied. History and Geography curriculum is taken from A Beka Book Series.

Science

Science is taught the second semester in second grade. The goal is to capture the second grader's attention and enthusiasm as God's world is studied. Topics include insects, plants, simple machines, weather, the solar system, and proper care of the awesome body God created for each child. Science curriculum is taken from A Beka Book Science Series
