Bible

Our curriculum teaches third graders that the Bible is the word of God and encourages Christ-likeness in students. Biblical events are connected to historical events. Third graders do a special mission project at Christmas. Bible curriculum is taken from Bob Jones Press.

Reading

Reading for Christian Schools emphasizes comprehension and develops phonics systematically.  A variety of selections provide the student with both pleasure and understanding. Novels read in third grade are Little House on the Prairie, Mr. Popper’s Penguins and Charlotte's Web. Our reading curriculum includes a strong emphasis on Reading Comprehension and Reading and Thinking Skills. Book reports are assigned every 9 weeks and include several different categories of books with an activity project. Reading curriculum is taken from Bob Jones Press, Reading for Christian Schools 3.

Language

Through creative jingles, students become familiar with the eight parts of speech. Some other skills covered are creative writing, sentence structure, correct use of punctuation, and capitalization rules. Language curriculum is taken from the Shurley Method and A Beka Language 3.

Math

Third Grade math topics include multiplication, division, metric measures, telling time, Roman numerals 1-1,000, solving simple algebraic equations, working with fractions, reading a thermometer and solving story problems with up to four steps. Math curriculum is taken from A Beka.

Spelling

The spelling program for third grade using words related to categories. Students review spelling patterns, words spelled with all the vowel and consonant combinations, prefixes, suffixes, plurals, and easily misspelled words. Students will also increase vocabulary through the addition of Wordly Wise. Spelling Curriculum is taken from A Beka and Wordly Wise.

Science

The purpose of Third Grade Science is to stimulate students' interest in science through a study of the wonders of Creation. These areas include: The nervous system and the five senses, the plant world, the six categories of animals, and their many different habitats. The students will show their understanding of the different kinds of animals through creating a science notebook. Science curriculum is taken from A Beka Exploring God's World 3.

Social Studies

The theme of the third grade history study is our American Heritage. It surveys American history in Christian perspective through the biographies of great Americans. The emphasis is on patriotism, character development, and the variety of contributions made by Americans to this country. Social Studies curriculum is taken from A Beka.

Penmanship

The four keys to legibility are taught and reviewed throughout the program. Through these keys to legibility, students apply what they have learned in special handwriting activities that strengthen each student’s cursive writing. Penmanship curriculum is taken from Zaner-Bloser.
