Bible
Goals for this year include memorizing and reciting a variety of scripture. The curriculum includes a survey and overview of the Old Testament. Students are challenged to examine their own decision-making skills as they study various Bible characters and their choices, both good and bad.
Spelling/Vocabulary
Middle School vocabulary instruction focuses on preparing students with strategies to unlock the meaning of words they will encounter in content area of texts, literature, and high stakes tests. Curriculum is taken fromWorldly Wise 5.
Social Studies/History
Fifth graders will further their knowledge of America's Christian heritage beginning with slavery and emancipation to present day. There will be an emphasis on freedom and equality for all. The Social Studies/History curriculum allows students to become familiar with maps, be able to read and draw a map, recognize the cause and effect of history, and participate in a variety of projects and field trips, which relate directly with the subject matter studied. Curriculum is taken from Veritas Press.
Science (Life Science)
Our Science and Health Program present the universe as the direct creation of God. A solid foundation in all areas of science – a foundation firmly anchored to Scriptural truth, is presented to fifth graders. Reinforcement is provided through project activities, dissection and participation in the ACSI Science Fair. Science curriculum is taken from Science 5, A Beka .
Language
Fifth graders will focus on mastering the eight parts of speech for correct usage, punctuation and capitalization rules, and correct sentence structure. All of this will be reinforced through creative and expository writing. Each student will write a teacher-directed, in-depth complete research paper focused on one of the fifty United States. Language curriculum is taken from Shurley Instructional Method and A Beka .
Math
The teach/reteach approach and abundant practice problems reinforces mastery of skills and concepts. Frequent story problems and problem-solving strategies make arithmetic practical. Emphasis is given to problem solving, percents, basic geometry, measures, fractions, decimals, beginning Algebra, prime and composite numbers, graphs and statistics. Math curriculum is taken from A Beka 5.
Reading
The novels studied throughout the year are closely aligned with the history curriculum including: Iron Scouts of the Confederacy, C.S. Lewis, A Father’s Promise and The Westing Game. Informal and formal book reports with combined activity projects are assigned throughout the year to encourage fifth graders to expand their love for a wide variety of books. At Christmas time, the fifth graders dress up as a character and read Christmas stories to the younger grades.
Study Buddies
The Middle School grades participate in our Study Buddies Program where students read various books to our Preschool and Kindergarten students. This builds community and relationships with younger grades as well as providing a leadership opportunity for the older students.
