Bible
Goals for this year include memorizing and reciting the book of Philippians by studying 3-5 verses a week. In addition, Jim Clarke guides the students through a curriculum published by Positive Action for Christ. This is an exciting and challenging course that develops the inner person and challenges a student's heart and mind.
Spelling/Vocabulary
Middle School vocabulary instruction focuses on preparing students with strategies to unlock the meaning of words they will encounter in content area of texts, literature, and high stakes tests. Spelling/Vocabulary curriculum is taken from Worldly Wise 6 .
History
World History is taught from Ancient Egypt through the Renaissance and Reformation Period. The curriculum used is from Veritas Press and many additional resource books. Veritas Press presents history chronologically, integrating biblically recorded history with events not recorded in Scripture. Learning history and the Bible chronologically gives students a tool for understanding how God is working today and what He has done during many past events.
Science
Our Science and Health Program present the universe as the direct creation of God. A solid foundation in all areas of science – a foundation firmly anchored to Scriptural truth, is presented to sixth graders. Reinforcement is provided through project activities, dissection and participation in the ACSI Science Fair. Science curriculum is taken from A Beka, Science 6.
Language
A combination of the The Shurley Method and A Beka Language curriculum will strengthen and encourage students on their path to becoming good writers. The Shurley Method is a unique method of teaching language skills by providing jingles for all sentence parts. This program reaches children with different learning abilities and gives students a solid skill foundation from which to build advanced writing and speaking skills. A Beka provides a biblical integration of grammar and writing skills; Language curriculum is taken from The Shurley Method, Shurley Instructional Materials, Inc. and A Beka's God’s Gift of Language .
Math
The teach/reteach approach and abundant practice problems reinforce mastery of skills and concepts. Frequent story problems and problem-solving strategies make arithmetic practical. Emphasis is given to problem solving, percents, basic geometry, measures, fractions, decimals, proportions, beginning Algebra, prime and composite numbers, graphs and statistics. Math curriculum is taken from A Beka Math 6.
Reading
Some of the literature studied throughout the sixth grade year is: The Golden Goblet, The Bronze Bow, George Mueller and The Door in the Wall. These encourage growth in Christian character as well as providing exposure to vocabulary words and the elements of literature. They are closely aligned with our history curriculum.
Study Buddies
The Middle School grades participate in our "Study Buddies" Program where students read various books to our Preschool and Kindergarten students. This builds community and relationships with younger grades as well as providing a leadership opportunity for older students.
